Why do we learn geography?

A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the framework and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

Our approach

At Ark Tindal Primary Academy, we appreciate the power that Geography holds to inspire our pupils to interact with the world around them.  It encourages pupil to become curious about the city, country and world that they live in and will provide answers to the questions that they have about our fascinating planet.  The Geography curriculum at Ark Tindal enables pupil to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas. These are also used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. We understand the importance of ensuring that our curriculum reflects the present day issues that are affecting our world. Our Geography curriculum has been thoughtfully planned to ensure it will stay with the pupils and encourage their fascination as they progress through their education. It has also been designed to help shape our pupil into people who care about the world that they live in and who strive to sustain it for their future.

  • Inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, and how they can care for it
  • Equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes
  • Develop understanding of how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time
  • Ensure pupils are competent in the geographical skills needed to interpret a range of sources of geographical information
