Our Gardening Club have been hard at work, both inside and outside of the school grounds, improving our local ecosystem along the way! Having planted bulbs in the brand new planters around the playground in the Autumn Term, we have all been enjoying the beautiful daffodils springing up over the past few weeks!
Year 6 Gardening Club members then visited Year 1 to talk about why they love plants and gardening, and even inspired pupils to plant their own seeds, creating a bee corridor around their outdoor area. We can’t wait to see the results of their hard work, and really hope our local bees enjoy them too!
Gardening Club's next project is focussed on turning an empty patch of land by the road into a beautiful community garden space, with help from our site team and grants from the Nature Park and Bupa Foundation.
Meanwhile, our Eco Council have been hard at work in our local park, with a litter pick. They filled 4 bags full of rubbish and can’t wait to get back out to do more to make our area better for everyone.
After Easter, we will be starting an exciting initiative to encourage children and their families to walk to school. WOW – the walk to school challenge is delivered by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, to help as many children as possible experience the benefits of walking to school. The challenge allows children to self-report how they get to school every day. If they travel actively (walk/wheel, cycle, scoot or Park and Stride) at least once a week for a month, they get rewarded with a badge. It’s that simple!
Eco Council will be keeping a close eye on how all of these initiatives are having a positive effect on our local environment with our new air quality sensor! It will allow them to see how pollutants from local traffic could be building up in our playground and impacting our health, and how our green spaces are helping to combat these.
