Business Trip: ARK Tindal at Virgin Media

Students visiting Virgin Media were from Year 6 and have recently completed the “Making News” Lesson Time Project where they created their very own school newspaper.

Virgin Media is a part of Liberty Global plc, the world’s largest international cable company. Together Virgin Media and Liberty Global serve 24 million customers across 14 countries, helping connect people to the digital world. This visit to Virgin Media was very exciting for Ark Tindal students, because they got to learn about all about apprenticeships and work alongside volunteers from Virgin Media all the way through their challenge.

Supported by volunteers from Virgin Media, the budding entrepreneurs were able to find out how Virgin Media support their clients and identify the skills needed to do so. The Challenge was to design and manufacture new, personalised business cards for each Virgin Media volunteer. Students had to work in teams and use each other’s strengths in order to come up with a great design and then work together in the production line to make as many business cards as possible before pitching their designs.

The Ark Tindal students worked well in their teams, communicating effectively and gathering up ideas for their business cards. They showed hard work and determination by asking the volunteers about Virgin Media and finding out new ideas for their business cards. Some ‘Red Hot’ design highlights include: business cards in the shape of a key – a key to the future that is, cards in the shape of laptops and mobile devices as well as a colourful pop-up design which you could display on your desk. All teams had thought very carefully about their presenting skills and presented brilliantly, using descriptive words and positive body language.

Watching the children work so well together and get on with the activities set was enriching.” – Teacher, Ark Tindal Primary Academy
“Seeing my team pull it all together in the final presentation was great, a real feeling of achievement. I wish there was something like this while I was at school.” – Volunteer, Virgin Media
“My favourite part of the day was working with the Virgin Media volunteers.” – Student, Ark Tindal Primary Academy
